Ampthill Town have had mixed results against United Counties League teams in their latest pre-season games – with a heavy home defeat against Cogenhoe before a draw at Newport Pagnell.

Following a 3-3 draw with Potters Bar, Ampthill hosted an experienced Cogenhoe side on Saturday and the Compton Park side ran out winners with a 5-0 win.

They proved to be a direct unit and, after early exchanges were fairly even, the visitors scored two goals in a 10 minute spell before the break.

They added three in the second half, while Town were out of luck in front of goal, with a Charlie Cullen free-kick finding the crossbar.

Town began their pre season travels on Tuesday and earned a deserved 1-1 draw from the short trip to Newport Pagnell.

Rhys Pearson gave Ampthill a 15th minute lead but the hosts had more of the play and levelled on the half hour.

A combination of poor finishing from Newport and good goalkeeping kept the score level at the break and it was a similar story after the interval .

Ampthill made several changes at the break but Newport were unable to break them down, while Dan Butler went close for Town once or twice as Ampthill came away with a good result against an experienced UCL side.

Town go to Eynesbury Rovers on Saturday and end their pre-season games with a trip to Olney on Tuesday.

They begin their new SML campaign on Saturday week with a home game against Southall before newly promoted New Bradwell are the visitors in midweek.
