CANOEING: Two young Viking Kayak Club canoeists have been selected for the England team to compete in the Pan Celtic Cup series against Scotland and Wales.
Slalom paddlers Andy Kettlewell, 17, who will compete in U18 solo canoe, and Ollie Gilbert, 13, who will be in action in the U14 solo kayak, will compete in a three-match series. One race will be held in each of the three nations, with the first in Grand Tully, Scotland, in April.
Kettlewell, pictured training at Duck Mill in Bedford, who lives in Wootton, competes in both canoe and kayak disciplines and is expected to soon achieve his ambition of promotion to the Mens Premier Division in both canoe and kayak.
Gilbert, from Northampton, who travels to Bedford for his Viking slalom training, finished last year as the British Junior champion in the U13 age group, but actually beat all the paddlers up to age 15.
Viking chairman Rob Bates added: “We’re really proud of both Andy and Ollie who have both progressed rapidly in the last year and were placed at the top end of UK Men’s Division One in 2011. We expect both to be promoted into the Premier Division very soon when the new season starts in March.
“We have high hopes for them and wish them all the best in the Pan Celtic races.”
