Eagles leave it late to see off groggy Gloucester

Soggy strugglers hold on until final minutes

Bedford Town 2 Gloucester City 0

Two goals in the last nine minutes made sured that the Eagles took all the points against a hapless Gloucester City side on Saturday.

The visitors have had unsettled season following their enforced eviction from their ground in July as flood waters engulfed Meadow Park, and are tipped for relegation after a rotten start.

They could have taken a shock lead in the fifth minute when Chris Thompson's right wing cross was initially fumbled by Michael Armitt, but the Bedford keeper redeemed himself with a superb save after the ball fell at the feet of Jamie Price.

But after that it was all Bedford, but a string of chances went begging as the home team failed to turn domination into a lead.

And five minutes before the break they lost Jonathan Woolf with a suspected fractured leg after an innocuous challenge, and their shape was badly affected by the blow.

Gloucester made more of a game of it in the second half, with chances at both ends.

But Armitt was equal to most of what City could conjure up, and even when he was beaten in the 79th minute Jon Darby stretched to clear off the line.

Soon after the deadlock was broken. A Phillips cross from the left was met by Sinclair 18 yards out, and City keeper fumbled his save with the ball crossing the line before he could gather.

Three minutes later it was all over after Sinclair was bundled to the ground as he split the defence with a pass to substitute James Hatch.

The referee played the advantage and the unmarked Hatch finished with aplomb to make the game safe.
