Double in sight for Blues Reserves
Second string on the verge of league and cup success
Dunstable Town's first team may have suffered an indifferent campaign but their all-conquering reserve side are on the verge of completing a league and cup double.
With Darren Feighery's men enjoying a weekend off from league action, attentions at Creasey Park switched to the second string on Saturday and they did not disappoint as they thrashed close rivals Ash United 4-0 to seal the Suburban League Division One title.
Two late goals from Jay Jay won it for the newly crowned champions, after strikes from Michael O'Neill and Ryan Quinn had put them in cruise control.
The result completed a terrific week for Blues Reserves after they had seen off Burnham Ramblers 2-0 in the semi-final clash of the Suburban League Cup in midweek thanks to goals from Daryl Elliott and Jay Jay.
It sets Lee Cowley's side up nicely for tomorrow night's final against Salisbury City at the Metropolitan Police FC, as they attempt to seal a unique double.
The first team return to BGB Southern League Division One Midlands action at the weekend when they entertain Rushall Olympic.
Barton Rovers, meanwhile, were in action on Saturday and scored twice in the final eight minutes to snatch a dramatic point at league leaders Evesham United.
Rovers trailed 2-0 at the break after Evesham's 30-goal hitman Mark Owens had hit a quickfire double just before half time.
His first arrived on 43 minutes when, following a break down the right, Owens was able to fire home past an off-balance Martyn Patching.
That lead was doubled in stoppage time when Owens drew Patching off his line and lobbed the ball over him and into the net.
Tony Fontenelle's header handed the visitors a lifeline on 82 minutes,
before substitute Tony Thorpe kept his cool in a crowded penalty area to calmly sidefoot the ball into the net with three minutes left on the clock.
Frazer Toms then had a glorious opportunity to cap a memorable day for Rovers, but saw his effort tipped over the bar after being sent clean through.
And after the final whistle, Evesham goalkeeper Nathan Vaughan was dismissed for laying his hands on the referee in frustration as the players left the field.
Rovers are back in action on Saturday, when Sutton Coldfield visit Sharpenhoe Road.
