Cross Blues' Wray of light
Bedford are their own worst enemy
Referee Tim Wiggleworth followed new RFU guidelines at the weekend and heavily clamped down on closing out at the lineout - much to the detriment of the Blues.
Time and again Bedford fell foul of the new hot topic and Jackson Wray admitted they had learned a harsh lesson.
The dual-registered Saracens number eight said: "It was always going to be a struggle and the penalties killed us second half. But if you go around blaming the referee you never learn anything.
"It was just our discipline. Conceding stupid penalties like that killed us."
And he felt after their riproaring start, which had seen the Blues surge into a 13-0 lead, they should have pressed home their advantage.
Wray continued: "It was in our hands and we wanted to come out first half and put a marker down.
"We had the potential to put a serious marker down, but we came away 20 points shy of what we should have got and deserved.
"Second half it was always going to be tough and this crowd was always going to get behind them.
"Their kicker punished us and kept them in the game. We should have put them out of the game. The last 10 minutes it was that close it was always going to be a fight. We were so close to getting out of it."
And he admitted that they only had themselves to blame as they failed to build on their initial dominance.
He added: "That's pretty much what we should have done the whole game. We let them into it and got punished. We probably should have played in the right areas.
"We tried to much to play and protect our lead."
