BLUES: Rayer happy with team effort

Reaction from Bedford's 50-14 win over the Barbarians

Bedford Blues director of rugby Mike Rayer said that he was thrilled with the team performance in the 83rd Mobbs memorial match on Tuesday.

Bedford ran in eight tries to record a comfortable 50-14 victory over the Barbarians.

Rayer said: "I was delighted with the team effort, it was a collective effort and we had good organisation.

"We played as a team, defended as a team and attacked as a team, which was pleasing to see.

"Everyone played well. Corey Hircock had a good game, Duncan Taylor continues to impress and Ben Lewitt added that experience to the youngsters."

Bedford opened the scoring after 24 minutes when Brendan Burke scored from under the posts, Brad Davies converting.

Two converted tries in quick succession from Melvyn Lewis and Tim Catling then gave the Baa-Baas a 14-7 lead.

Bedford looked like going into the break behind but for a superb try in injury time at the end of the first half.

Davey collected the ball on his own five metre line and went on a mazy run into the Baa-Baas half and played in Ben Lewitt, who had the easiest of tasks to bring the scores level at the break at 14-14.

Bedford dominated the second half scoring six tries and a total of 36 unanswered points.

Harry Allen was the first to score; 30 seconds after coming on as a sub, when he went over in the corner for an unconverted try.

Ben Lewitt then scored his second try to extend the lead to 12 points. Five minutes later James Knight got in on the act to make the scores 33-14.

More Blues pressure resulted in a further score in the 72nd minute; Will Chudley going over in the corner.

And there was still time for two more tries from Duncan Taylor and substitute Mark Kohler to round of a fine win.

Rayer added: "It was an exciting match with some proper tackling and we played some great rugby after the break.

"I think the difference between the teams was that fact that our boys have played together often this year, unlike the Baa-Baas."
