BLUES: Giant lock Sean aims to run riot

Our interview new with Bedford Blues lock Sean Tomes after he completed his move from Exeter Chiefs

Sean Tomes says he wants to "cause destruction" to opposition defences in the Championship next season after completing his move to the Bedford Blues from Exeter Chiefs.

The 25-year-old lock is the son of former Scotland international Alan Tomes and has previously played for Newport Gwent Dragons and Newcastle Falcons, while also spending time on loan at Doncaster during the 2007-08 season.

Standing at 6'6" tall and weighing in at 120kg, Tomes is certain to make a huge impression in the Blues pack.

He told the Times & Citizen this week: "I consider myself a running ball carrier and I want to prove that to myself and I want to cause as much destruction to opposition defences as I possibly can.

"I want to play regular rugby and that's why I took the decision to leave Exeter.

"I was actually interested in Bedford before they were me – just through past experience of playing against them.

"Their reputation of running rugby is just what I need – to get the ball in my hands as much as possible and see what I can do on the pitch.

"It's exciting times, it's a fresh start for me and something I've wanted for a while now. The Exeter thing wasn't really as successful as I thought it would be and I hope to start again with Bedford.

"My aim is to go into pre-season as fit as possible. I haven't played much rugby since Christmas time, so I still feel pretty fresh."

Although Tomes' former side convincingly beat the Blues on their way to Guinness Premiership promotion, Tomes admits he prefers Bedford's brand of rugby.

He explained: "Exeter are strong and really hard to beat at home and can break anywhere on the pitch. If they don't get you in the forwards, they'll get you in the backs.

"But from watching Bedford, they seem like a team who go out and want to play rugby more.

"Where as with Exeter, it was all about winning the league and winning games no matter how, maybe sacrificing the quality of rugby."
