Birthday boy agrees to sign for Blues

Bedford tie up Thrower deal

Former Saracens full back Edd Thrower received the ideal birthday present this week when he finally completed his move to Bedford.

Thrower, who turned 28 yesterday (Wednesday), had been part of the Goldington Road club's pre-season programme, featuring in all three of the warm-up matches.

Now the ex-London Irish and Wasps player, who has also played in Italy and represented England at U18, U19 and U21 level, is a fully-fledged Blue.

Director of rugby Mike Rayer, speaking exclusively to the Times & Citizen said: "He's registered with us now.

"Edd has done really well, he's a quality operator who has played at the highest level.

"He's enthusiastic in training, a good talker and a good communicator.

"We saw Edd briefly in pre-season with a couple of cameo appearances, but what we've seen we liked

"He would fit into the back three when his opportunity comes around."

Despite finally getting his man, Rayer confirmed that Thrower, pictured above, wouldn't be an automatic selection for their trip to Rotherham at the weekend as the new signing will need to fight for his place.

He said: "We're going to need competition over the course of the season because Pritch (James Pritchard) is going to be away on international duty.

"Not withstanding that, we want Edd to really put pressure on Pritch. Just because he's captain doesn't give him a divine right to be in the starting 15.

"We want that right throughout the team.

"He's going to have to be patient to gain his opportunity though."

The capture of Thrower completes Rayer's involvement in the transfer market for now.

He continued: "We've got 36 players pretty much registered, including the dual players.

"George Kruis is involved heavily with Saracens, so we haven't see him for a bit.

"Alex Brown has been added for cover at props, so we're up to our optimum level.

"Sam Walsh could be ready by the end of month, which is great, He's made an unbelievable recovery from his shoulder injury and was scrummaging on Tuesday night.

"Ben Lewitt starts running this week, while Vassy (Ian Vass) was out running around too.

"Robin Boot is progressing slowly. It will take some time as he's just had an operation.

"We will get injuries as we go along, but the vast majority of the squad are fit."
