Best yet as Waders beat high-flying Burnham

Saturday wins for Stotfold and Potton, Blues draw but United and Reds both lose at home

Biggleswade Town enjoyed their finest Zamaretto Southern League win of the season this afternoon by avenging a 2-1 defeat at Burnham by the same scoreline back at the Carlsberg Stadium.

In a game full of good football on a sticky Langford Road pitch, the Waders had the better of the goalless opening half but conceded against the run of play on 70 minutes when Burnham's Stuart Swift volleyed home following a deep cross.

However the Waders deservedly levelled the game six minutes later when man of the match Bobby Dance latched onto a superb ball from teammate Jamie Steele to beat Burnham keeper Paul McCarthy with a clinical finish.

And with 79 minutes gone it was fellow midfielder Glen Lamacraft who smashed home the winner after Burnham's Swift had seen his rasping effort rebound off the underside of home keeper Dean Bull crossbar.

The Waders – who are now up to sixth in the Division One Midlands standings – now host Luton Town in the Beds Senior Cup this coming Tuesday before travelling to Sutton Coldfield Town in the league next Saturday.

Up the road at Arlesey, the Blues were held in a 1-1 draw by visitors AFC Sudbury, former Waders Mark Coulson scoring the home goal a minute from time after Darg had opened the score for the visitors 19 minutes into the contest.

Leaders Hitchin Town's game at Slough was postponed along with three other Division One Midlands while Barton Rovers lost 3-2 at Soham Town Rangers despite goals from former Stotfold pair, Callum Donnelly and Joel Mason.

In the Spartan South Midlands League, Langford crashed 7-1 at home to Chalfont St Peters, the side who finished as close runners-up to the 2008/9 season's Premier Division champions Biggleswade Town last term.

Charlie Strutton bagged a hat-trick, John Carroll a brace while Barry Brosnan and Daniel Hughes got the others, the Reds' Lee Pateman having made it 1-1 early in the first half before the floodgates opened.

Biggleswade United's run of SSML defeats continued as they went down 1-0 to Haringey Borough, the game having been switched to Second Meadow in midweek.

And finally in the United Counties League, Stotfold hosted Northampton Spencer at Roker Park in one of only two Premier Division games to go ahead and at 4.45pm they had thumped The Millers 6-2.

And at The Hollow, Potton United returned to winning ways with a 4-0 thrashing of Burton Park Wanderers.
