Four Bedford boxers were in action in the ABA Senior Novice National Championships at the weekend

Alex Marshalleck beat Scott Walsh (Blackbird Leys) in the U71kg box off.

Marshalleck was able to dictate the bout from the start, landing frequently, particularly to the body, and claiming a well-earned unanimous decision.

In the U86kg box off, Bedford’s Julian Wilson beat Asif Mohammed (Spit ’n Sawdust).

Mohammed proved an awkward opponent, carrying low hands and holding Wilson up close.

The Bedford man was able to land solid jabs throughout the contest and worked busily up close with short punches to body and head.

Wilson was caught by a handful of well-timed counters in the final round but was able to secure the win with a strong flurry in the closing seconds.

Both Marshalleck and Wilson will box in the Home Counties final next weekend.

Bedford heavyweight Conroy Downer was given a walkover to the national quarter-finals on Sunday, November 18.

In the U67kg Class B box off, Steven Shields put in a spirited effort in losing a unanimous points decision to Reading’s Oshane Clarke.

Shields allowed Clarke to land too many clean shots throughout the first two rounds. He adjusted and showed great fitness as he forced his opponent on to the back foot in the final two stanzas, but it wasn’t enough to seal the win.
