Bedford ladies canter to Canterbury triumph

Bedford HC ladies moved up to second place in the East Premier after scoring four goals in the final 10 minutes to beat high-flying Canterbury 6-0 and leapfrog them in the table in the process.

Jenna Maclaren, Sam Sothcott and Laura Weaver returned to the Bedford squad as Gavin Markham’s side looked to extend their unbeaten run extending back to February 18.

Bedford started the game confidently off the back of two victories last weekend and Canterbury only looked threatening when Bedford made mistakes as keeper Bex Howitt had hardly any saves to make.

Dutch forward Yvette Van Yperen scored the game’s opening goal midway through the first half after the initial shot from Kate Costin was smothered by the Canterbury keeper and she was on hand to net.

The impressive Becky Childs then tucked in a deserved goal as she followed up on a short corner rebound, before a knee injury forced her off.

Bedford dominated the second half as Canterbury’s bare squad of 11 players tired.

And Bedford’s pressure told in the final 10 minutes as Verity Mason McLeod struck her first of the season from the top of the D after Van Yperen and Riverside Grill Player Of The Match Kelly Bingham were denied by the increasingly busy visiting keeper. Bingham and Van Yperen then took charge and set each other up for a goal apiece.

In the final minute Sarah Walsh won the ball on the baseline and found Maclaren at the back post to net her first-ever first team goal for Bedford in her 55th appearance.

This Saturday Bedford travel to bottom of the league Wapping.
