Bedford are pipped to the Cordon Trophy
Bedford A had to make do with second place at the Cordon Trophy – the first big event of the new chess season.
The four-round rapid play contest saw teams of four competing for the trophy presented by Sandy Cordon, for so long a mainstay of Bedford chess.
After three rounds, Bedford A, made up of Steve Ledger, Paul Habershon, Ravi Arulnandhy and Alex Taylor, had nine points out of a possible 12.
Lying joint second and only half a point behind Milton Keynes A, Bedford were only able to score two points from the last round, leaving Milton Keynes A the clear winners by a somewhat flattering margin of 13.5 to Bedford A’s 11.
Steve Ledger was one of only four players in the contest to win all four of his games.
Bedford B, made up of Steve Pike, Chris Hill, David Maddams and John Harbour, finished with five points, including a good win by Pike against the dangerous Peter Rawcliffe of Milton Keynes.
