ANGLING: John fills his boots at Orchid

John Roberts of Tingreth Fishery caught a 24lb common which was a personal best, plus a 20lb mirror, five carp between 12-15lb plus about 50lb of crucians from Orchid Lake all in a day.

Ray Stokes of Luton also notched his personal best with a 24lb 3oz carp from the same lake backed up by four others from 18lb to 23lb.

Big crucians and roach upwards of 1.5lb are showing very well on both Orchid and Cherry Lakes and this relatively mild weather has given rise to many more catches than you would expect in November.

Over at Luton AC, Phil Randall, landed a 23lb 11oz mirror along with a low double at Beckerings Reservoir.

Brett Herdman was at the same venue and found the fish feeding during the night, landing five commons and one mirror to 18lb 2oz on quest baits.

In other recent action, Ollie Caress bagged a mirror of 17lb 8oz at Beckerings.

Blunham AC held their club match at Willington this week with Bob McLennan taking the honours with one chub and a few roach for 3lb 9oz from peg 79.

There was a tie for second place between Gary Edwards on peg 78 and Dave Edwards on peg 83 both with 2lb 14oz mixed bags.

At Vauxhall AC the rains have arrived, with the rivers now running bank high and full of rubbish.

This has not deterred the barbel anglers though, who have been waiting for this moment, from putting on big leads, a pellet and sitting it out.

Several fish have been banked up to 10lb but no really big fish have been seen yet. The mild weather has seen good sport continuing on the lakes, with bream and roach showing in numbers at Harrold and Sharnbrook.

Scale down your tackle and roach catches of up to 10lb can be taken in a relatively short session, as John Oldbrook proved this weekend. Vauxhall host an open match at Kempston this Sunday. For tickets call Tony Kaye on 07828125262.

Queens Works AC fished their first winter league match at Willington last Sunday. Crystal clear waters ensured that every angler struggled to get a bite. Steve Townsend fed chopped worm on peg 68 and did not have a touch until 18 minutes before the whistle.

He landed two nice perch for 2lb 4oz and easily won the match. Owen Radwell had three small perch on peg 57 and six ounces was enough for second place. Steve Dunham was third with 5oz on peg 54.

It was also the Knockout Cup final. Derek Taylor thought he had lost it when he was given half an ounce for his one gudgeon. Still he lifted the trophy when old adversary Mick Astle did not have a bite on peg 62.
