Nick Barden’s magnificent 104 was the main contribution in a total of 258-9 as Ampthill I maintained their 100 per cent start to the season against Hitchin.

James Sneath took two early wickets in the Hitchin reply and then finished the innings off, claiming 3-21 as Hitchin were bowled out for 171.

A fourth victory on the trot means Ampthill and Luton Town & Indians are the only sides with maximum points after four games in Saracens Herts League Division One.

Elsewhere, the Sunday 1st XI were beaten at Dunstable. The home side scored 256-4 in 45 overs, with Ampthill falling way short on 170-6. Callum Riches hit a quick-fire 50 but it was not enough to prevent Ampthill from slipping to the defeat.

The Saturday 2nd XI lost by 36 runs away to St Albans and the Sunday 2s were beating by Kempston Hammers by three wickets in a rain-affected low-scoring match.

Meanwhile, the Saturday 3rd XI lost to Old Warden by 39 runs, chasing a target of 211. Young ster Sam Clipstone took 4-31 while Fakhre Ali and Kieran Smith both scored 50s in the Ampthill response.

The Sunday 3rd XI lost to Aspley Guise by seven wickets; Colin Ruddick scored an unbeaten 61, however the total of 121 was not enough.

In action elsewhere, the Saturday 4th XI lost to Clifton by eight wickets.

Ampthill set their opponents a target of 169 to win, with Marcus Lake batting through undefeated on 59 and Lee Houghton finishing 72 n/o. However, Clifton chased the total down quickly, taking only 25 overs to win the game.

The Sunday Development XI lost to their counterparts at Elstow.

Ampthill scored 123-8 in their 40 overs, but Elstow cruised to a nine-wicket win, with Jack Flynn undefeated on 58.
