Ampthill Town I maintained their promotion push with a thrilling last-ball win at Hitchin on Saturday.

Batting first, Ampthill reached 241-9 off 53 overs, with Barnes, Riches and Darlow all scoring 40s.

The home side struggled as Jimmy Sneath took four quick wickets, but they recovered and needed just nine off the last over.

However, Darlow kept his nerve and took both wickets as victory was secured by five runs. Darlow finished with four wickets as Ampthill stay in second place in Herts League Division One.

Elsewhere, the Ampthill Saturday IIs lost by 35 runs to St Albans. The visitors scored 249-7, with Morgan taking 3-47.

Tom Degnan scored 62 in the final total of 214 all out as Ampthill slipped to another defeat.

The Saturday IIIs lost by six runs to Houghton Chargers as Houghton scored 218-9, with Lee Houghton taking 3-39. Dan Draycott hit his maiden century, scoring 109, but Ampthill fell just short on 212-9.

The Sunday first XI lost the big relegation battle at home to Eversholt. Setting 187-9, Callum Riches top scored with 75. However Eversholt knocked off the runs for the loss of five wickets with 12 overs remaining.

The Sunday IIs completed the double over Clifton, winning by 13 runs as skipper Richard Haxell top scored with 79 in a 177 total. Jimmy Potter took 5-35 and Martin Warman 3-47 as Clifton were dismissed for 164.

The Sunday IIIs beat Harrold by nine wickets; Kieran Smith took three wickets for four runs in Harrold’s 86 all out. Justin Brooke (45 n/o) and Nick Key 31 (n/o) led the side to victory.

Finally, the Sunday fourths were beaten by 100 runs at home to Eaton Bray. The visitors scored 229-4, with Matt Houghton taking 3-22. George Cook top scored with 27 in Ampthill’s 129 all out.
