A lower school is celebrating a first after being recognised for its sports teaching and achievements.

Milton Ernest VC Lower School has become the first in Bedfordshire to receive the Association for PE and Sport Quality Mark with distinction.

The award recognises excellence in PE and rewards the school’s high quality PE programme, teaching and extensive out of hours provision.

Harley Dowe, leading PE teacher, said: “The school has developed multi-skills schemes and assessments which many schools within the county use to develop children’s core movement skills.

“This includes an extensive after school programme consisting of several clubs covering a range of sports – multi skills, dance, sports, sports club for girls, gym, gifted and talented gym, quick sticks and football.

“We have also embedded ICT into the PE curriculum through use of iPads, interactive whiteboards and Apple TV. This has greatly improved the children’s evaluating and improving skills.”

After making the application for the award, the school was visited by a validator, a PE advisor for Cambridgeshire, who watched a lesson and spoke to children and staff.
