A brand new adventure playground in the heart of Bedford has been unveiled - and already has the thumbs up from the first children to test it out.

The play area in Russell Park was officially opened by the children from nearby Castle Lower School as well as Mayor of Bedford, Dave Hodgson and portfolio holder for community and regulatory services, Councillor Sarah Holland.

The new playground is on the site of the former play area in the north east corner of the park and offers far more activities for children aged 3 and upwards.

The council constructed the improved facilities using funding from nearby developments, and the playground has been shaped by extensive consultation with park users.

Councillor Hodgson, said: “The new Russell Park play area was designed and built following extensive public consultation and it was great to see so many children out enjoying the new facilities.

“The play area was designed and built on time and on budget and it provides even more opportunities for young people to enjoy themselves. I am sure it will prove to be a very popular site for young children.”

Councillor Holland said: “The former play area on Russell Park was 25 years old and despite still being very popular was ready for an upgrade.

“This brand new play area is a significant improvement on what was available previously and has also been opened well in time for what we hope will be a warm spring and summer in Bedford borough, which includes the upcoming Kite Festival and River Festival.”
