Tributes paid to 'the nicest man'
Nick Mortimer from Yelden died on August 15
Tributes have been paid to a popular man who suddenly collapsed at home.
Nick Mortimer, of Spring Lane, Yelden, died on Sunday, August 15. He was found by his stepson Stevie and friend Lindsey Boon, having collapsed at his home the day before.
Friends have paid tribute describing him as a popular, funny and well-loved man.
Mrs Boon who also runs the local pub The Chequers, said: "It was horrific to find him like that, it was completely out of the blue and a huge shock for everyone.
"He was the nicest man I think I have ever met. He was a huge huge rugby fan, he travelled the world just for rugby. Everyone in the village knew and loved him, it's going to be a massive loss to the pub and to the whole community of Yelden.
51-year-old Nick, who ran a recruitment company in London, has lived in the village for around the last 20 years.
He had a partner Sue McGuigan and three stepchildren Stevie, Harriett and Nicola.
He was a fan of Northampton Saints Rugby Club and regularly drank in The Chequers.
Fellow punter and friend Bob Payne said: "He was a great friend, I met him through the pub and he became a good mate. He was a great guy and enjoyed his rugby and his beer.
"When he had a night out he really had a night out. He was a very happy character, a very benevolent, sometimes cantankerous man. He will be greatly missed."
Mrs Boon, 35, added: "He loved those children to death, he would do anything for them. I think he found the family he had never had with them and he never referred to them as his stepchildren, he treated them as his own."
His cause of death has been listed as severe head and chest injuries.
An inquest has been opened and adjourned.
The funeral is to be held today at Yelden Church at 11am with the wake being held at The Chequers.
People have been asked to attend wearing coloured clothes or rugby tops.
