A third road bridge in Bedford town centre would relieve congestion and improve trade, according to the man who hopes to become mayor.

Conservative mayoral candidate Jas Parmar has put the issue of Batts Ford Bridge back in the spotlight in the hope of moving the project on.

He said: “A new bridge has been talked about for 50 years – we need another river crossing to revitalise the high street.

“Years of indecision by various local governments has left us with a terrible traffic problem.”

Mr Parmar has gained the support of Bedford and Kempston MP Richard Fuller, who yesterday met Department of Transport staff to arrange a meeting with the Secretary of State Patrick McLoughlin to discuss the long-awaited project.

Mr Fuller said: “Jas has identified this as an important priority for the town centre but these decisions take time and money.

“A new bridge would have a dramatic impact on traffic flow and would open up many options to the town to improve road use, such as creating more pedestrian zones.”

Mr Parmar and Mr Fuller are also due to meet Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government Eric Pickles today to discuss the issues which Bedford faces.
