Tories select mayoral shortlist

Four possible candidates to become Mayor of Bedford

Conservatives in Bedford have drawn up a shortlist of four candidates to decide who will stand for Mayor of Bedford next year.

Parvez Akhtar, John Guthrie, Roger Rigby and Tom Wootton were selected by local party chiefs on Tuesday evening.

Both Mr Rigby and Mr Wootton are current Bedford Borough councillors.. Mr Rigby is a former speaker of the council and Mr Wootton is also a former county councillor.

Mr Akhtar was the party's mayoral candidate in 2009. Mr Guthrie is a former national chairman of the Tory Reform Group.

A final selection meeting will be held on Friday, September 24, at Bedford School.

Local Conservatives who have been in the party for three months-plus will be able to take part in a question-and-answer session with the candidates, before a final vote.

The winner will challenge current Lib Dem mayor Dave Hodgson to become be directly-elected Mayor of Bedford in the election next May.
