1,000-tonne crane eclipses the Willington landscape

A monster 1,000-tonne crane eclipsed the Willington landscape on Thursday to build a bridge at the quarry.

The crane, which took a day and a half to erect, was being used to lift parts of a new bridge which is being built at the site.

And despite the mammoth start up time it completed the job in just an hour.

Site manager Simon Bryant, pictured left, said: "It is always good to be involved with large projects.

"Having the bridge will save us having to bring gravel around by road.

"So we now have a bridge and the rest, as they say, is history."

The structure will be used to transport 1.2million tonnes of gravel from one side of the river to the other, easing traffic congestion around the quarry site.
