Windfarm gets the go ahead

DESPITE a three-year campaign to fight the Nun Wood windfarm near Harrold, the application has been given the go ahead.

The Campaign to Protect Rural Countryside (CPRE) Bedfordshire and local residents have been fighting the proposal of 12 wind turbines straddling three country borders, in a bid to protect the landmark setting of the Three Shires Way, west of Harrold,

But following a recent Appeal by Npower the Planning Inspector has now given permission for the Nun Wood windfarm to go ahead.

Turbines would stretch from Lavendon and Warrington in Milton Keynes Borough across to Harrold in Bedford Borough and out to Bozeat in Wellingborough District

Peter Scott of CPRE Bedfordshire submitted evidence at the inquiry on behalf of CPRE and local groups stating: “The site of the six 125-metre high turbines to be built in Bedfordshire is within the Hinwick Wooded Wolds – a historic landscape of rolling landform with subtle valleys, significant woodland cover, sparse settlements of farmsteads and small villages.

“It is a landscape that has inspired artists and writers. The character of this corner of the Great Ouse Valley will be permanently devalued.”

On hearing the decision, windfarm expert Brian Skitrall said: “The inspector has virtually ignored local evidence and a particularly strong case on the impact the windfarm would have on a livery business.”
