War veterans given tax reprieve
War veterans who could have been financially penalised by government regulations, will keep their council tax benefit in Bedford Borough.
After taking on responsibility for the benefit from the government, Bedford Borough Council is set to introduce a local council tax reduction scheme from April 2013.
The new rules will protect the discount for war pensioners who would have been financially affected by new regulations.
Councillor Shan Hunt, portfolio holder for revenues and benefits at Bedford Borough Council, said: “We have taken every possible precaution to ensure our most vulnerable households are protected from this government-imposed change.
“On the most unfair proposal, we took immediate steps to guarantee war pensioners would not lose any money even if the government refused to change their minds. Those who have served their country should be supported by their country once they have returned home. We will not break that covenant; not now, not ever”.
