Chipping away at non eco-friendly roads
Used chip fat could take the plaice of regular asphalt on Bedford's roads, if a new trial is successful.
Everand Road in Goldington was the first to receive the new surfacing as part of a trial using chip fat-treated asphalt.
The street has been resurfaced in two halves.
One half is surfaced using regular asphalt and the other is made from the more environmentally friendly Vegetex, which contains a sealant made
from recycled chip fat.
Both halves of the road will be monitored over a year to see if the new material is suitable for the rest of the borough's roads.
Mayor of Bedford Dave Hodgson and deputy mayor Charles Royden watched as public services providers Amey laid the road trial on Tuesday.
Mr Hodgson said: "We are always looking for more environmentally sustainable methods of working and this innovation certainly fits that bill.
"Residents will know that this year we have put extra funding into road repairs in a drive to improve streets and pavements across the borough.
"As in all other areas, we will continue to work as sustainably as possible, both in environmental and financial terms, so I look forward to finding out about the results of this trial with interest."
