VIDEO: Making jewellery

Natalee Hazelwood and Hayley O'Keeffe meet Jane deLacey Munday

A civil servant who gave up her job to become a jewellery designer is reaping the rewards of her life-changing decision.

Jane deLacey Munday, who lives in Putnoe, dedicated herself to her new direction a year ago and is determined to make her hobby into a dream career.

She said: "I have been making jewellery for 20 years and working with silver for seven. It was a risk to give up my job but it has made such a difference to my life."

Jane uses precious metal clay to make her pieces which she sells at Bedford Market, online and at craft fairs. She has recently teamed up with Bedford Borough Council to offer classes in designing and making jewellery.

Jane makes the pieces, which retail from 20 to 100, in a specially designed workshop in her garden. Because the clay, which is fine silver mixed with a chemical binder, is soft before firing she is able to create casts of unusual natural objects to create truly unique patterns.

Jane said: "I take my inspiration from nature and, even if I make a run of items from the same cast or mould, there will never be two the same."
