Two friends have raised over £12,000 for a breast cancer charity after one of them was diagnosed with the life-threatening disease last year.

Pauline D’errico, who helps runs Francos Ices and friend Connie El-Budri, owner of Flower Boutique in Bedford, held a charity ball after Pauline suffered with breast cancer last year.

The ball was held at Bedford Corn Exchange and featured ballroom dancers, music from pupils at Biddenham Upper School, a magician, two-step dancers, and a band and disco.

Connie, 48, came up with the idea to hold a charity ball after she was inspired by Pauline when she was battling the disease.

She said: “Pauline was so courageous she was never negative. Every now and then I knew she was getting down because of the chemo, but she would never say anything. She was just so strong, it was amazing.”

Pauline was diagnosed with breast cancer last year in 2011, just two days before Christmas Day. She went to the doctor after noticing a lump on her breast.

She said: “It was a massive shock and the fact it was just before Christmas Day was horrible. We decided to not tell the children until after Christmas.”

Pauline underwent surgery to have the lump removed and she then underwent chemo and radiotherapy.

The ball raised around £12,500 for Breast Cancer Campaign, Anyone who wants to donate can email pauline@francos-ices.co.uk
