Scrap a motor, help a good cause

The Meningitis Trust is encouraging the public to scrap their old cars for cash as part of a novel fund-raising scheme.

Giveacar is a not-for-profit enterprise that organises the donation of unwanted cars for charity.

Every vehicle - regardless of its condition - is collected free of charge from anywhere in the UK, and the donor can choose to give either all or half of the money raised to the Meningitis Trust.

The vehicles are then either recycled to high environmental standards or sold at auction. Proceeds from the sale are then donated to the Trust, with even old ‘bangers’ netting an average of £100!

Giveacar manager Alex Harvey said: “We’re looking forward to telling potential donors about the Meningitis Trust when they call the office. It’s a great opportunity for us and the public to learn more about meningitis.

“The Trust provides a great service and sources of information for meningitis sufferers and we are sure they will start to see donations rolling in.”

Trust chief executive Sue Davie said: “The money from these donations will fund anything from a session of art therapy to enable a child to deal with the impact of meningitis, to an awareness talk at a school, providing literature to staff and pupils to educate them on the signs and symptoms of the disease.

“This scheme is a simple and effective way of reducing the amount of unwanted or unused cars whilst helping meningitis sufferers on the road to a better life. It’s win-win!

“The Trust relies entirely on the generosity of individuals to continue our vital work – supporting anyone affected by meningitis with free professional services, as well as raising lifesaving awareness of the disease and its symptoms.

“For the many people who have been, and continue to be, affected by meningitis, and for those who will sadly be affected in the future, the Trust is a lifeline. Support like this ensures that this lifeline can continue.”
