Redundancy cost felt at council

In the last financial year 126 staff members at Bedford Borough Council have been made redundant with the taxpayer footing a bill of £1.268million.
And with more redundancies still to come, and each member of staff getting paid on average £10,000, the cut is just one of many being felt as part of £36million in government imposed savings.
Graham Tranquada of the Bedford Against The Cuts campaign group, said: “This is not only people’s livelihoods, and in some cases careers coming to an end, it is the work they are now not doing for services being provided to the borough.”
A council spokesman said: “Bedford Borough Council, like all local authorities, is facing an unprecedented challenge to produce a balanced budget, year on year.
“Throughout this process, the council has been clear that we will focus on reducing back office costs in order to protect front line services as much as possible.
“Redundancies and their costs are minimised through redeployment opportunities. “
Over the next few weeks the T&C will examine the impact of these cuts on the people of Bedford Borough.
