Real nappies giveaway
Eco-friendly
Recycling bosses will work up a stink next week - as part of Real Nappy Week.
A joint team from Bedford Borough Council, Mid Beds District Council and Bedfordshire County Council will be encouraging parents to switch from using disposable nappies, with a cash incentive to those who make the switch.
Jennifer Sawford, waste development officer at County Hall, said: "Each baby will go through up to 5,000 nappy changes by the time they are potty trained.
"If a baby was wearing disposables that would equate to approximately one tonne of nappies thrown away into landfill every year, the equivalent of two baby elephants. Parents choosing to use real nappies on their children will reduce their household waste by up to 50 per cent.
"The really good news is that if you live in Bedfordshire, you may be entitled to 25 cash back from Bedfordshire County Council when you spend 50 or more on cotton nappies or subscribe to a nappy laundry service."
