Project wins top prize in Biffawards

A project to restore a  village nature reserve has been awarded a top prize by waste managment company Biffa.

For the past five years volunteer group Friends Of Flitton Moor has been working to increase the  biodiversity of Flitton Moor, in a project funded by a landfill tax grant Biffaward.

The project, which restored a negelcted nature reserve, was shortlisted for a prestigious national award in the Biodiversity category at the 2012 Biffawards, a ceremony which recognises the people who transform their communities and improve the environment.

And the group was thrilled to find it had not only been crowned the winner of its cathegory, but it was the  overall winner as well.

Volunteer warden for the site David Sedgley said: “It was a massive surprise for us, we weren’t event expecting to win in our category, let alone be the overall winner. It’s  absolutely fantastic.

“We were told the reason we stood out was because the project was run entirely by volunteers, the other finalists were all run by national  companies or charities, and that we have a yearly fun run.”
