Pothole fury for angry motorist after no action

b12-123 Michael Nester complains about the potholes on the b530 at Chimney corner near Houghton Conquest after he has had to replace his tyres.

AN angry motorist, who has been forced to replace three of his tyres in six months, has criticised highways chiefs for not fixing a giant pothole.

Michael Nester, 55, first reported the pothole on Chimney Corner on the B530 near Houghton Conquest to Bedford Borough Council in August last year, but six months on the road has still not been repaired.

But the local authority has said that some repair work was carried out in November and it has been subject to monthly inspections.

Michael, of Daysfield, Houghton Conquest, has frequently rang the council to complain nearly every six weeks since he first reported it but now says he is “fed up of being ignored”.

He said: “I first noticed it last year when it started out as just a small indent, but like everyone else probably, I just thought somebody else had reported it.

“By August I noticed it had got bigger, so I thought I would phone the council. It turned out that it hadn’t been reported, and they said they would look into it.

“I rang again in September because it shred one of my tyres, and I had to get it replaced. But they had no record of my previous call. I was told they would get an engineer out to get it repaired.”

Michael added: “Nearly six months later, nothing has been done. I’m really angry that they have pretty much ignored all my calls. I went into the council offices last Thursday and I was promised somebody would call me, but I haven’t heard anything yet.

“I have had to replace three of my tyres and people now drive around it to avoid it. It’s really dangerous.”

A spokesman for Bedford Borough Council said: “Monthly inspections of the road are carried out and some emergency repairs were carried out last November.

“The inspections have also identified a number of potholes on private land which the council is not responsible for repairing.

“We are aware that the road surface here is in need of attention, and Chimney Corner has already been included in the council’s programme of highways maintenance works.

“Full resurfacing of the area around the Manor Road junction will take place between April 5 and 9.”
