Police chief locked up
Chairman of Beds Police Authority experiences what the average detainee goes through
Is this the face of a hardened Bedford criminal?
Well no actually, it's the top brass of Beds Police Authority, who was banged up in the slammer this week.
Peter Conniff, chairman of the authority, spent six hours in the cells at Greyfriars Police Station in Bedford on Tuesday (January 26) in order to test the facilities and experience what the average detainee goes through.
Those arrested by Beds Police spend an average of six hours in police custody and Mr Conniff wanted to walk in criminals' footsteps to ensure people who are detained are treated properly.
Mr Conniff said: "There is a first time for everything.
"Now I know what it feels like to hear the door clamp shut, with me on the wrong side."
The move is part of a national week to highlight the work of police authorities and the difference between the police force and the
police authority, which is an independent organisation acting as a watchdog on policing.
