NEW parking rules could be introduced to dozens of streets in south Bedford, meaning residents have to pay for parking permits to keep vehicles outside their homes.

Bedford Borough Council has begun a public consultation on introducing a Controlled Parking Zone (CPZ) in four areas around Bedford Hospital.

These would mean that non-residents would not be able to park in certain streets between 8am-6pm from Monday to Saturday - but residents would have to buy parking permits to use in their own streets.

A consultation leaflet sent out to residents by council bosses this week said: “Bedford Borough Council is aware of the continuing high level of non-resident/commuter on street parking that occurs in the residential areas south of the river surrounding South Wing Hospital and extending to areas broadly centred on Ampthill Road, St Leonards Avenue/Street and the western end of Cardington Road.

“The ‘non-resident’ parking causes great difficulties for residents in finding parking spaces near their homes particularly during the day.”

There are currently 11 CPZs in Bedford, and the council is looking at introducing four more.

Three of them would fill an area between Kempston Road and Ampthill Road, from Maryville Road to Kingsway, and the fourth would extend the current ‘Zone M’ CPZ around Kingsbrook Road.

Parking permits currently cost £25 for the first permit, £73 for the second and £94 for the third. Business permits cost £180 for the first permit and then £250 for others.

All households also receive one free book of visitors vouchers, covering a limited number of week, weekend, day and short-stay permits.

Questionnaires have been sent out to homes in the affected area.
