MBTC-11-02-13- Jane Frusciante. Bedford Hospital. Nurse Jane Frusciante has won a police commendation for talking a man down who was about to jump off a bridge.

A nurse has been recognised by police chiefs for her actions after she was the “only person” to help a man who was threatening to throw himself in the river.

Jane Frusciance, 45, who lives in Flitwick, was on her way home from work on September 16 last year, when she spotted a man on the bridge at Prebend Street in Bedford preparing to jump in the river.

She has been praised by police chiefs after she was the only person to stop and help. The man, who was in his late teens, came off the bridge after she asked him to give him a “mum hug”.

She has now been awarded with a Local Policing Commander’s certificate of merit for her actions.

Jane Frusciance has been awarded the Local Policing Commander’s Certificate of Merit for her “excellent communication skills”.

The mother-of-two, who is a nurse at Bedford Hospital, said: “It was a bit of a shock to receive the award, I definitely wasn’t expecting it.

“I don’t think of myself as a hero or anything, I just did what I had to, it’s the type of person I am. I have a daughter the same age as him and I just kept thinking what if it was her.”

Jane was the only member of the public to be recognised in the awards, which were handed out by Beds Police at a special ceremony last month.

She added: “I was just walking past and I just thought he was looking at the river, but then I realised his feet were hanging over the gate.

“I phoned my partner and asked him to send some help. I started to talking to him and he said to me ‘why would a woman like you want to help me’.

“I told him I’m a mum and he is the same age as my daughter. He was telling me about everything that had happened in his life. I just said to him ‘come here and give me a mum hug’.”

He then climbed off the bridge and gave Jane a hug, as the police arrived.
