Joe Calzaghe spends Father's Day in Bedford
Ex-super middleweight champion helps to open the newly refurbished band stand in Mill Meadow
Boxing champion Joe Calzaghe enjoyed a heavyweight bout of nostalgia in Bedford on Father's Day.
The former world super middleweight champion, who retired undefeated in February, joined his father and trainer Enzo on a walking tour of Bedford, which took in his dad's former school and home. They were joined by friends and family members.
Joe said: "I'm really happy to be here, my dad was brought up here and he's told me some great stories about when he lived in Bedford.
"It's been great to come with my family and the children and see the school that he went to and where he used to live.
"I'm also happy to be here because there is a big Italian community and I've always had a lot of support from the people of Bedford."
Enzo, 60, moved to Bedford aged three after emigrating with his family from Italy. He lived in Dudley Street and attended Goldington Lower School before moving to South Wales where Joe was born.
The climax of Enzo's return to Bedford saw the family join Mayor Frank Branston at the newly refurbished band stand in Mill Meadow.
Father and son officially opened the bandstand and watched the first in a series of free Sunday concerts by the Bedford Town Band.
In the evening the family communed at the Cappucino Bar Restaurant in Newnham Street, which is owned by Enzo's school friend Fred Spiniello.
At the restaurant the party dined on homemade antipasto and bolognaise with relatives and friends that some family members had not seen for 25 years.
