Hemlock Morris Dancers' first birthday

Troupe celebrate 12 months of dancing joy

Bedford's only mixed-sex morris dance troupe celebrated its first birthday this week, and invited the Times & Citizen to join the fun.

Hemlock Morris Dancers has confounded the age-old tradition of morris dancing being for men only.

And in the group's first 12 months it has raised hundreds of pounds for various charities, and found a rehearsal home at the Ent Shed in Castle Road. Hemlock also has a number of appearances already lined up for 2010 including the River Festival and the Rhythm Festival.

Fellow morris groups from across the region joined in for a birthday shindig on Tuesday evening.

Spokesman Andrew Miller said: "We have attracted a predominantly younger membership than your stereotypical morris dance side.

"Perhaps it's the alternative or gothic-style apparel. Either way, we like to think that our take on traditional dances bring a breath of fresh air to the tradition, and that our enthusiasm and obvious enjoyment of what we do brings a smile to the faces of those that come to watch us"
