Government takes up school decision
A final decision on Bedford Free School is now set to be made by the government, despite a Planning Inspectorate hearing this week.
Bedford Borough Council was told on Tuesday (September 25) that Secretary of State Eric Pickles has “called in” the issue.
The in Cauldwell Street school opened earlier this month, despite twice being refused planning permission.
A Borough Hall spokesman said: “Following the Planning Inspectorate hearing on Tuesday, the council was informed that the inspector had received a telephone call advising him that the decision on the Bedford Free School appeal has been called in by the Secretary of State so that he can determine it himself. At present, the council has not received any guidance on how long it may take to publish a decision.
“The council continues with its opposition to the establishment of a secondary school on the Cauldwell Street site because of the associated highway dangers and is therefore also continuing with its enforcement action.”
