Fruity fun for Fairtrade Fortnight
Patrick Hall joins Fairtrade push
Bedfordians went bananas as Fairtrade Fortnight was launched in the town centre on Saturday.
Patrick Hall, MP for Bedford and Kempston, and borough council speaker Roger Rigby were on hand to give out the free Fairtrade fruits to shoppers and encourage them to support the cause.
Fairtrade offers producer organisations a fairer, stable price for products that covers costs and enables farmers to support their families and invest in a better future.
Hazel Mitchell of the Bedford Fairtrade Steering Group said: "We were very pleased with the response in town.
"We gave away hundreds of Fairtrade bananas and found very few people did not know about Fairtrade."
The next event for Fairtrade is a fashion show, which will take place at St Andrew's Church in Kimbolton Road, Bedford, on Saturday, March 27.
Hannah Reed, from Fairtrade, said: "We want everyone to get busy swapping for Fairtrade, swap your usual bananas for Fairtrade bananas, your usual socks for Fairtrade socks and your usual cuppa for a Fairtrade cuppa.
"Each swap will help producers in the developing world to get a fairer deal."
