Safer roads is the aim of a new scheme for Kempston.

Councillor Carl Meader has used £3,000 of his councillor’s ward funding for the Speedwatch scheme. Residents have been trained in the use of a dedicated traffic camera which clocks the speed of vehicles travelling down their streets.

But the aim of the scheme is safety not profit - drivers caught going over the speed limit are not hit with a fine, but are sent a polite letter from Beds Police asking them to watch their speed in future.

Mr Meader said: “This has had a positive response so far and I think that Kempston residents will continue to support it.

“It’s not a money-making scheme, it’s about high-visibility and residents helping to tackle speeding where they live. That is a problem is Kempston, just as I’m sure it’s a problem in other areas.”

The first Speedwatch day took place on Saturday along Woburn Road, but is being used across the town and not just in Mr Meader’s Kempston South ward. And on Tuesday the team reported the results back to the Kempston Community Safety Forum.

Mr Meader said: “One criticism people make about speed cameras is that they can be seen as first and foremost a way of hitting motorists. But that’s not what this is about. It is about letting motorists know about their own driving habits.

“If a resident says that they have got a problem with speeding in their road then the camera can be positioned in their street. This is about high-visibility and getting residents involved.”
