Detectives launch gun search
Police are appealing for witnesses after a man with a suspected handgun was forced to drop the weapon by a member of the public.
The incident happened on Friday afternoon at around 3.20pm in Church Lane in Bedford when the man was seen waving the weapon and also pointing it at people.
One brave passer-by chased the offender, grappled with him and made him drop the weapon, but the man with the gun left the scene, but was found by armed response police officers a short time later and arrested.
Although officers did a thorough search for the gun, it was not found.
The man is described as black, slim build, wearing a red and black coat and black hat.
Although a man has since been charged with the offence of possession a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence,
Det Con Chris Avery is keen to hear from anyone who saw any part of this incident.
He said: “We want to talk to anyone saw this, even if they think others may have already spoken to us. In addition, there is still either a handgun or an imitation weapon of some description out on the street, or maybe someone found it and has taken it home.
“But we need to get that weapon back so that no-one else is either frightened or injured by it. If you know where it is, or find it, please contact us immediately.”
Det Con Avery can be contacted direct at Bedford CID on 01234 275332, or via the non-emergency police number 101 or completely anonymously via independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. You do not have to give your name but could still receive a cash reward.
