Council bosses join T&C fuel campaign

b10-32 Dave Hodgson reaches 100 days in office as elected mayor of Bedford.

PETROL station bosses across Bedford Borough are set to be lobbied by council chiefs to bring down their prices, after the Mayor of Bedford joined our campaign to get fairer prices for our motorists.

Next week Mr Hodgson will table a motion at a meeting of Bedford Borough Council, which he hopes will address the disparity between petrol prices in Bedford and other nearby towns.

Petrol bosses will be asked to explain why Bedford’s motorists have to pay higher prices than people who live in towns such as Milton Keynes and Northampton - a gap Mr Hodgson branded “unacceptable”.

Mr Hodgson said: “The gap between fuel prices here and in nearby towns is utterly unacceptable.

“I am hopeful that all councillors will come together on this across party lines to put pressure on the fuel retailers to do the right thing and put an end to the unfairness faced by drivers locally.

“By speaking with one voice against this indefensible situation we can bring real pressure to bear on the retailers and achieve a fairer deal for Bedford Borough.

“Fuel bills make up a large part of many people’s weekly household budgets, and action from the retailers to bring prices down in line with other areas cannot come a moment too soon.”

The Times & Citizen launched our campaign two weeks ago after revealing that people who stock up on fuel in Bedford pay an average of £40 more per year for fuel than those in Luton, and £31 more than the national average.

Since our original story, the website www.whatgas.com lists the highest price of unleaded petrol in Bedford as rising to 138.4 pence per litre.

The mayor’s motion will be also call for the council to write to the chief executives of all major fuel retailers with multiple outlets in Bedford Borough, asking them to explain their pricing strategy.

The motion states: “This council believes there is no justification for forcing Bedford Borough residents to face higher costs for getting to work and other day-to-day use of their cars.”
