Battle to the death!

Reliving the Dark Ages as Vikings invade Bedford

Viking warriors invaded Bedford last Sunday (September 2) taking no prisoners as they donned their armour and charged Castle Mound.

The sound of steel on wood echoed along The Embankment, as Wryngwyrm, a Dark Age re-enactment group, provided a spectacular display in a traditional 9th century battle to the death.

Spectators also had the opportunity to try on the heavy chainmail armour, helmets and swords worn by the ancient warriors.

Visitors could also learn some of the Viking arts, like weaving or leather work and Sven the Skald was on hand to tell tales of life on the battlefield.

The free history lesson continued at Bedford Museum where people could learn about Saxon Bedfordshire and forging coins.
