Back of the net for sports award student
A STUDENT who spends his weekends encouraging other people to get back into playing football has been named as Bedfordshire’s first Sport Maker of the Month.
Lee Warren, who is studying sport and exercise at the University Of Bedfordshire’s Bedford campus, has been awarded the title to recognise his voluntary work with staff and other students.
He runs the university’s own Get Into Football scheme alongside the Mars Football Association Just Play programme.
Lee said: “It isn’t just about playing football - joining a sports session also helps to improve your physical fitness and health while socialising with others.
“The football sessions are going well, but there is room for more players to join in and have a kick-about. The best thing is that we can tailor the sessions to what people want, whether it’s just a game, training drills or skills coaching.”
Lee has his Level One coaching certificate and is just about to start his Level Two.
In the future he also hopes to achieve his UEFA B Coaching Licence, and in his hometown of Needham Market in Suffolk he also coaches an under-8’s team.
He said: “I was awarded a Gold coaching bursary from the University which has meant I can take my coaching to the next level.
“My course is really good and it will help me get the sort of job I want. Ideally, I’d love to work within an elite football club, helping with the sport science side of things.”
University staff and students can sign up to the sessions by emailing justplayfootball@hotmail.co.uk or by searching for ‘University of Bedfordshire Mars Just Play’ on Facebook.
