A Sunday afternoon at Esquires

A taste of Bands At The Bar with Danny, Pete, and Cherry Lee Mewis

Our video report this week takes us to Bedford's best-known music venue Esquires, for one of the regular Sunday afternoon Band At The Bar sessions.

Welsh songstress Cherry Lee Mewis was the headline act, with a mix of smooth blues tunes and rousing R&B romps.

And we spoke to promoter Pete Burridge and general manager Danny Amatsah about the ethos of Bands At The Bar.

Mr Burridge said: "There never seemed to be anywhere to go on Sunday afternoons so I thought we would try this and now it's going to be our fifth year in September. It kicks off about 5pm for two 45-minute sets.

"We usually have bluesy bands, sometimes we put on a younger lot of bands, and we have Mat Roberts who puts on his own, well, almost a variety show, once every season.

"We do get quite an eclectic crowd, anyone from ten to 70 comes here."

Mr Amatsah added: "I take a lot of pride in Esquires. This is my home, my world.

"It's very much a community establishment. We have people of all sorts of ages, from children to grandparents.

"We have all sorts of genres of bands here, it's not just kept to one style. It's a community thing, with music for everybody, from young to old."
