52 Things You Never Knew About Bedford - Superheroes

Part three of our new feature

So maybe the streets of Bedford don't lend themselves to having Spiderman swinging from the rooftops. And it's possible that when Kal-El escaped from the planet Krypton he didn't land in this part of the world.

But Batman has certainly been spotted in town, and the God of Thunder very nearly had a Bedford link...

Because both Batman Begins and Dark Knight, the Batman films directed by Christopher Nolan, were filmed just down the road from here at Shed Number Two of the former aircraft hangars in Cardington.

The shed is now a film set, where many Gotham city scenes were shot.

For the latter film, cast and crew were directed to the set by signs branded with the monicker 'Rory's First Kiss' - a reference to the director's son.

Auditions for extras to appear in the first film were held at Bedford's The Place theatre more than six years ago - current content editor Ben Raza put himself forward for such a role when he was a pup reporter.

He didn't get the call but perhaps you did - if so, why not drop us a line and let us know?

Stars such as Christian Bale are understood to have stayed at Bedford's Swan Hotel during the filming, while director Nolan was so taken with the area and the Cardington set that he returned to the hangars with Leonardo DiCaprio to shoot Inception, which is currently showing in cinemas.

Of course Batman is part of the DC Comics universe, but rival brand Marvel has its own run of cinematic offerings.

Bedford-based actor Kevin McKidd was in the running to play Thor in next year's film of the same name. He missed out on that role, but he did portray Poseidon in Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief, released earlier this year.
