Gardeners - summer has arrived so it’s time to get outside and prepare your entry for Garden Of The Year 2012!

GARDENERS – your prayers for rain have been answered in style this month! And now it’s time to get busy and prepare to enter our Garden Of The Year competition.

We have once again teamed up with our friends from Frosts at Willington and Bedford In Bloom to search for and salute the hard work of our finest gardeners.

Entry is free and there are great prizes of Frosts vouchers and trophies to be won!

Although we have had a spring sprinkling, we have had dry winters so there is a new category for the best drought tolerant/water conservation garden, recognising gardeners who have adapted best to these conditions.

The full list of categories is:

_ small front garden under 50sq m

_ large back garden over 70sq m

_ small back garden under 70sq m

_ hanging baskets/ containers

_ community garden

_ school/ pre-school garden

_ allotment/ vegetable garden

_ drought tolerant/water conservation garden

From these categories the judges will also select a gardener of the year and also the overall Times & Citizen Garden Of The Year.

It’s free to enter.

Simply take a colour photo of your garden looking its best, and complete an entry form.

This form can be downloaded from our website – www.bedfordtoday.co.uk – picked up from Frosts at Willington or the Times & Citizen offices in Mill Street, Bedford, and it will also be published in the Times & Citizen nearer to the closing date.

Judges will inspect a shortlist of gardens in early July.

Marks will be awarded for:

_ Overall impression: how pleasing it is to the eye, how well the overall design works in relation to the size of the garden

_ Planting: variety, colour, overall maintenance and general health

_ Sustainability: use of composting, recycling water, encourage for wildlife, fruit and vegetables

Allotments or vegetable gardens will be judged on uniformity, composting, the mixture of crops and cleanliness - ie: free of weeds and pests.

The closing date for entries is June 22. Good luck!
