Students from Hastingsbury Business and Enterprise College in Kempston are runners-up in a competition to design a new sandwich.

The challenge was set by Subway and the group went up against students from five other teams in the region at Cambridge University. The Hastingsbury team - Khamis Ali, Rebecca Urquhart and Abbie Darnell - created a Sub called The Homeslice, and won £250 of Amazon vouchers. Almost 100 teams from across the region entered the competition.

Subway development agent, Liam Dalgarno, who chaired the judging panel, said: “All the students did a fantastic job and we were extremely impressed with their pitches and the creativity of their ideas. We have been running the Design a Sub competition for six years and I am still always overwhelmed by the enthusiasm and creativity we see from our entrants. The team from Hastingsbury Business and Enterprise College clearly put a lot of thought and hard work into their entry and they should be very proud of how far they got in the competition. Selecting our overall winner was an extremely tough decision.

“As a franchise business, the Subway brand has a strong entrepreneurial spirit and we are committed to fostering and developing that spirit amongst young people. The students who entered the Design a Sub competition demonstrated excellent creative and business skills and it was, as always, a privilege to be involved. All our entrants, and particularly our finalists, should be very proud of their achievements.”

Emily Jane Taylor, head of business and ICT at Hastingsbury Business and Enterprise College, said: “The students thoroughly enjoyed getting to grips with the Design a Sub competition. It gave them a fantastic opportunity to put the skills they are learning into practice and they all did a great job. Taking part in the Design a Sub competition has been a fantastic experience for them and the college is very proud of their efforts.”

Tied into the National Curriculum, the Design a Sub competition asked teams to compete to create the best marketing campaign and business plan around their new Sub, based on the theme of #SocialSubs.

The overall competition was won by Bury St Edmunds County Upper School for their ‘Subtastico’ design. The Sub will be launched in stores throughout the region early next year.
