A Bedfordshire boozer crowned Pub of the Year is preparing for it’s annual hot dog festival.
The Chequers, in Westoning, was crowned the county’s best pub for 2015 at the Bedfordshire Food and Drink Awards event, last week.
Still high on their acheivement, owners Philip and Vicki Kelly said the accolade will be celebrated in the pub on its Hot Dog Extravaganza Charity Night.
The fundraiser will also feature the first Hot Dog Speed Eating Competition.
Philip said: “We were presented with a trophy, and of course, the honour of being voted Pub of the Year. All our customers have been great about voting for us.
“Now we are focussing on the Hot Dog Extravaganza and speed eating competition. I had a practice run at eating ten hot dogs and it nearly crippled me - I got my tactics wrong. It’s the bun that’s going to be the problem.
“There will be plenty of water to wash it down on the night.”
The pub is supporting the The Bedfordshire Downs Syndrome Support Group during 2015. It has raised £3,600.
The Hot Dog Extravaganza features 12 different recipes, including a home-made vegetarian sausage and the infamous Dangerous Dog, which has jalapeños, Naga chillies and Satan’s Chilli Paste.
Philip said: “Last year, we offered the Dangerous Burger with the chilli toppings. Four grown men were sweating and crying trying to eat one burger between them. It was one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen.”
The hot dog evening begins at 6pm, on Wednesday, July 1, with the eating competition starting about 7.30pm.
