Cadet Sergeant Shannon Lawrence has been named as the sword-bearer for the new High Sheriff of Bedfordshire, The Countess of Erroll, during her year in office.
Shannon joined the Army Cadet Force three years ago, aged 13, and is now a senior cadet with the New Cardington Detachment.
As well as numerous qualifications and promotions Sgt Lawrence has also received a number of prestigious awards. In 2013 she won New Cardington Detachment’s Cadet of the Year and followed up that success with awards for 5 Company’s Best Assisting Directive Staff and Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Army Cadet Force’s Best Drill Instructor at Annual Camp 2014.
More recently Sgt Lawrence successfully completed the Senior Cadet Instructors’ Course at Beckingham Camp. While she was there, she was nominated for the course’s top student. Since completing her course she has been putting her qualification to good use, delivering a variety of lessons, across a multitude of subjects, to her junior cadets.
Sgt Lawrence particularly enjoys drill which will come in useful for the upcoming ceremonial duties as the sword-bearer to the High Sheriff.
She also involves herself in the local community, taking part in numerous events including litter picking with the Big Clean-Up initiative, recruiting for the detachment, the Haynes Village 100 Classic Car Show, charity fundraising in the community and assisting in the organisation and running of events with the local youth club.
Sgt Lawrence also manages to fit in school work around her hectic schedule and will be sitting her GCSEs later this year and hopes to go onto sixth form in September.
Lady Erroll said: “I was extremely pleased to have Shannon attend my installation as the High Sheriff of Bedfordshire on March 29 and for Shannon to support me as my sword-bearer for my term of office. I hope this will be an exciting experience for her to add to her CV.”
