FIRE crews were called to Bedford High Street on Saturday afternoon ((April 14) after a small fire began in an electrical cupboard at SportsTraider.

Crews from Bedford and Kempston were at the scene after being called at 4.45pm. They then evacuated the building and cleared smoke from the building.

The shop has since been closed but is expected to re-open later this week.

SportsTraider is a charity that sells sports equipment and clothing at a low-cut prices. As well as offering both new and high-quality second-hand sports clothing and equipment at affordable prices, it gives thousands of pieces free to locally disadvantaged youngsters where the shops are located.

Founder Lance Haggith has received numerous gongs for his work, including a Big Society Award and the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Unsung Hero.

He said: “It was not a major fire, just one of those things. Thanks to the quick-thinking of our staff it was dealt with quickly and safely with no real damage, and we expect to re-open shortly.

“It is going to be an exciting year for SportsTraider. We have just opened our Watford store, and there will be four more in the next few months. By the end of the year we hope to have ten across the country.”
